Strange Flavors Of Ice Cream For Your Consideration

By Marquerite Velasquez

According to the International Dairy Foods Association, about 1.5 billion gallons of ice cream and other frozen desserts are produced each year. It is definitely true that Americans love ice cream, and vanilla is the top flavor year after year. However, while vanilla and flavors such as mint chip and chocolate are among the most favored flavors, there are a few places where you can purchase some truly unique varieties of ice cream. Here are a few flavors that you might not have heard of before.

You may have heard of some crazy, odd, and weird names of ice cream flavors before. Ben and Jerry have opened the market for unconventional names for their ice creams, starting with one called Cherry Garcia. Their ice cream flavors however, are still those with traditional ingredients of ice cream, like those with chunks of chocolates, cherries, cookie bits, and pieces of frozen banana cuts.

An interesting flavor option is garlic flavored ice cream, although this may not be a top option of anyone yet. However, it is interesting to note that garlic ice cream has been served at the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival in California, and also the garlic festival in Saugerties, in New York. There are also some restaurants offering this unique flavored ice cream treat, like The Stinking Rose in San Francisco.

Bacon is also one which many people want to put in their treats like donuts and also ice cream. One can see bacon ice cream recipes on the internet, if one makes a search, and the popular chef Heston Blumenthal has featured a bacon-and-egg ice cream in his Michelin-star restaurant, The Fat Duck. Others have also their own flavored bacon ice creams, or their own versions using prosciutto rather than the American-style bacon.

Avocado is used as dessert in many countries worldwide although this is not something often used for sweet dessert. Some famous chefs like Alton Brown and Rick Bayless have these unique cold treats as recipes because avocado can be a great ice cream flavor. Avocado not only provides a lovely color, it also makes the ice cream very creamy indeed.

If you prefer more traditional flavors, but still are in search of a unique ice cream treat, head down to the Culver City ice cream shop YoKuMon. Their signature treat is a $2 ice cream sandwich unlike any other. The staff at YoKuMon sandwich gourmet ice cream between two homemade cookies to create this delicious delectable. The cookies, which come in eight different flavors, are freshly baked by the staff throughout the day. If you are searching for ice cream in Culver City, YoKuMon definitely offers some of the best and in addition to the ice cream sandwiches, you can have shakes, sundaes and even shave ice.
