Reasons To Switch To A Coffee Substitute

By Sharon Olson

Drinking coffee first thing in the morning and even throughout the day is something that many people around the world do. It has become such a staple of the daily routine to the point that it is even a cult phenomenon with various chains and franchises available to cater to the addiction. A coffee substitute, however, may just be the answer for anyone concerned about the effects of regular consumption of this beverage.

As well as it being trendy, people drink this hot drink because, let's face it, it tastes heavenly. Others drink it at specific times of the day to help them wake up, or for an extra boost of energy. This is particularly the case for anyone wishing to pull an all-nighter on a special project or schoolwork. Furthermore, the beverage does have certain health benefits, contrary to what some may believe.

The drink, when consumed on a regular basis, can actually decrease the risk of getting Type 2 diabetes. It has also shown to have some effect in preventing certain diseases, particularly Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's. There are lots of antioxidants found in coffee as well, and everyone knows that antioxidants are good for the body.

However, even with its benefits, there are certain harmful effects associated with caffeine consumption. While it may be good for staying awake, it does not necessarily keep an individual focused, which may be counterproductive. Furthermore, caffeine consumption could affect sleep habits over a period of time. Relying on the ability of coffee to provide energy means that the body is unable to tap into its natural energy sources as a result.

Substitutes for the beverage have gained popularity in recent years for many different reasons. To begin with, it helps with the problem of becoming addicted, which is always bad news. Caffeine also produces more stress hormones in the body. The drink itself can be expensive, depending on a person's taste, so substitutes can be more cost-effective. Other reasons for switching could be in the case of religion, such as with Mormons, or perhaps there are certain recipes that children might like as well.

You may wonder what a substitute is made from. The list includes vegetable ingredients like sweet potato, potato, beetroot, carrot and asparagus. Meanwhile, there are also products available made with almonds, acorns, molasses, dandelion root and wheat bran.

Substitutes can be prepared in a number of ways, all of them similar to or exactly like preparation methods for coffee and also tea. Some come in a very fine powder form and immediately dissolve when added to boiling water. Others are ground and can be brewed just like coffee, such as chicory. Finally, there are substitutes which can be prepared much like tea, as they come whole and must be steeped in boiling water.

Popular substitutes include Ayurvedic Roast, Teeccino and Dandy Blend. Ayurvedic Roast gets points based on the flavor, which is comparable to the real thing. It is also completely organic. Teeccino is a herbal, gluten-free option with no soy or caffeine. Dandy Blend, meanwhile, is an instant coffee option which is made of healing herb dandelion root.
