Basic Cooking Skills For College Students

By Dorothy Stone

Someday everyone is going to be on their own, where they won't have mom to cook for them. Going off to college can be difficult when all you know how to is to make a toasted cheese or scrambled egg. Basic cooking skills are necessary. It is something one has to take a look at before venturing out there.

Knowing how to make things like chicken, pasta, stir fry, sauces and salad will help you as you persevere with the next couple of years ahead. It means that you won't simply have to be stuck making sandwiches and eggs. On the flip side, it means that you don't have to be ordering in pizza. As a student, it is important to weary of your budget.

The first thing to know is what should be in the refrigerator and the pantry. Even this is daunting. Most people leave this until the night before, and this is why people order pizza or go for a burger. Unfortunately, this becomes unhealthy and expensive. Eventually, it becomes like second nature.

A couple of desserts will come to good use as well. Many people know how to make the basics, but there are folks who have no idea where to start. They don't know how easy things like cookies and cake can be. There are even some gourmet delights that can be served at dinner parties which are a real treat.

It is nice to start off simple. It is not necessary to be eating a huge amount of ingredients in one bowl. Of course, you can make this more elaborate, but it is a good idea to keep it simple initially, along with a dressing that you make as well.

Basic sauces like white sauce and tomato sauce are great because you can add what you want to this. The best way is to experiment with roast vegetables or olive oil. You can put in peanut butter. It can be nice to use bacon or ham with broccoli. Keeping it simple is often better, remembering to flavor it well.

Learning to grill is a task which would come to good use. There is nothing better than a grilled chicken burger. This is easily made on a grill pan. You can buy a packet of stir fried vegetables and just add a little soy sauce.

You can experiment with Jasmine and brown rice. Some people go on to learn about risotto which turns out to be filling and affordable, depending on what you put in the dish. It is a good idea to stick to dishes which can be stretched out. You can even freeze these and have them on another night so that you are not eating leftovers for the next couple of nights.
