Results Of GMOs In Agriculture

By Susan Wilson

Scientists discovered a new method of enhancing food production through altering the genetic makeup of the genes making up these crops through a process known as genetic engineering. The products of this process are known as genetically modified organisms. There are advantages and disadvantages of these GMOs in agriculture.

There are those who believe GMOs is the final solution to the terrifying food security issue. These crops are supposed to be pest resistance. This is made possible by secluding parts of the genes of the crop which are weak towards pests and replacing them with pest resistant genes. This means that the final yield will not be reduced at all costs as there will be no failure by pest in any. These crops have been identified to as having a very active resistance to adverse weather conditions meaning that upon growing them one is assured of a good yield.

The output of these crops is assured to be large as they fail to be affected by both pests and adverse climatic conditions. Food security is therefore guaranteed at all times. GMO crops and animals are also well known for requiring fewer farm implements such as chemicals and time this reduces their cost of production to the farmers. Farmers income is thus improved day by day and also the countrys per capita income too.

The worlds population is always growing at an alarming rate. Feeding this magnitude of people will mean constant deforestation to pave more and more space to cultivate. This by definition is deforestation which means more carbon dioxide will be in the atmosphere thus promoting global warming. However with GMOs, there is no need of cultivating large trucks of land to produce enough food.

With increased food production thanks to genetic engineering the supply of food in the market will increase hence the cost of food supplies on the market decreased. Additionally, genetic engineering has created an opportunity for new crop and animal products to be developed . A good example is a particular kind of tomato that can grow in the salty environment.

Despite their positive impacts, these foods once taken make one to develop their antibiotic makers within the body. These antibiotics are responsible for most people not being productive to medication. Most children also tend to develop allergic reactions once they take these foods.

Genetically modified foods have never been 100% safe for human consumption and other species too. Most of these products may cause illness or death to plants, animals or even people. A thorough check should always be conducted to ensure the safety of the product before its release to the market as the safety of consumers is paramount.

The taste of genetically modified foods is frequently poor and unpleasant. This is usually attributed to the proteins and chemicals added to the genes of the organism during genetic engineering. Another dangerous disadvantage is that of transferring of genes. A pest-resistant gene may be transferred and combined with weed to create a super weed that cannot be affected by pesticides.
